GARYSBURG — Something different is coming to Garysburg this weekend. Kephurn Fuller, a native of the Roanoke Valley, is bringing ‘Street Soccer’ to the Roanoke Valley. Fuller described street soccer as “And-1 (street basketball) mixed with soccer” and wants to give the area a dose of his world. Fuller played for the Roanoke Rapids Sidekicks back in 1996 before moving to Atlanta, Ga. He then went onto play college soccer at George Mason University before going to play overseas in Europe. He has recently started an organization called Jogasc, bringing street soccer to kids in the inner city.

“I just want to show people what street soccer is and how it can help the community,” Fuller said from his home in Arlington, Va. “We want to get soccer in the black community.”

Fuller said soccer gave him a chance to see the world and wants kids today to realize it is a sport, like baseball and basketball, that can open up many doors. “Soccer is not just running back and forth,” Fuller said. “It’s the most expressive game in the world, people just don’t know about it.”

More than 1 billion people watch the World Cup and soccer events in certain countries pack stadiums on a regular basis.

Fuller has already started a street soccer club in the Washington, D.C., area and is looking to expand south. “I want to get Garysburg and Roanoke Rapids involved,” he said, adding, “you can find a lot of talent in the Roanoke Valley.” Fuller’s goal is to be able to host a street soccer tournament in Garysburg every year and open up doors for the kids in that area. “Hopefully in two or three years the team will be at the level it needs to be to compete.”

Teams that Fuller has coached in the past have traveled all over Europe playing soccer. The event will be this Saturday, in the Garysburg town park located on Popular and Kee Street. Fuller will also be filming a documentary on street soccer this weekend. The event is open to the public.
